Explorer Internship Programs 2025: Applications Now Open!

NOAA Ocean Exploration actively investigates the ocean’s mysteries by employing advanced scientific discoveries, technology, and data sharing. By collaborating with public, private, and academic sectors, NOAA effectively enhances our understanding of the marine environment. As a result, they help protect ocean health, manage marine resources sustainably, and boost the national economy. Furthermore, their mission raises awareness about the ocean’s significance in our daily lives, cultivating a deeper appreciation for what lies beneath the surface.
What the NOAA program offers
In line with their mission, NOAA Ocean Exploration dedicates itself to training the next generation of ocean explorers. The Explorer-in-Training program provides students and early-career professionals with immersive experiences that develop their skills in ocean exploration. Since 2009, this program has supported over 170 interns, equipping them with interdisciplinary skills and allowing them to contribute directly to NOAA’s projects and expeditions.
This unique program features two internship options:
- A 10-week summer internship, where students can engage in long-term projects while receiving mentorship from NOAA experts.
- A 2-4 week expedition-based opportunity, typically aboard the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, which allows participants to assist with seafloor mapping operations. This hands-on experience enables them to contribute to critical missions in ocean exploration.
In addition to valuable work experience, interns also participate in professional development workshops, conferences, and networking opportunities. These experiences expose them to various career paths in ocean exploration. Moreover, interns present their findings at the virtual NOAA Ocean Exploration Internship Symposium, sharing their work with staff, colleagues, and other participants.
